On this car the decals consist of three iterations of the words "Lotus Excel" (positioned on boot and rear quarter panels) and a double pin stripe of unequal widths that run along the car and across the boot, the lower line outlining both front and rear quarters. I have measured the pinstripes in position and they seem to run around the car between 1.5 and 2 cms below the black rubber trim strip. I'm not convinced that these werent all intended to be 1.5cms?
Pinstripes
The upper stripe is 0.455 inches wideUpper strip width on rear quarter panel |
... and the gap between them is 0.144 inches
On the side of the car the upper stripe is positioned 0.458 inches from the bottom of the trim strip (12mm)
Rear Quarters
Trim finishes 1.5cms from the end of the panel and the profile mimics the panel break. The lower line follows the panel break around at a distance of 1.5 - 2 cm from its edge. It does seem that the vertical section is following the panel profile around 2cms distant whereas the lower edge is closer at 1.5cm.
Thin trim line echoes panel profile at a distance of 1.5cm. |
The fine stripe then continues across the rear quarter in front of the wheel and across the bottom of the door to join up with the lower strip in the front quarter.
Rear quarter text
Text is above trim strip, apparently the same size font as that on the boot, and also positioned 2cms up from the trim strip
Letters also 2cm up. |
The pinstripe is below the trim strip and again positioned 1.15cms below the rubber as described above.
Boot:
The double pinstripe runs above the rubber trim at a distance of 2cm. Its in two sections; the left hand length of double stripe is 97cm, the right hand 10 cms. Sandwiched in between is the text.Lower stripe 2 cms above trim strip |

Front quarter
Trim is cut to mirror the panel end profile and again at a distance of 2cm.
Hello Mike. My name is Ola Sorhagen. I live in norway. I would just like to thank you for all the work you have put into making this blog. I bought a Lotus Turbo Esprit 16 years ago (from England) and imported it to Norway. I discovered quite a few faults with the car and took out the engine, gearbox/differential many years ago. I have finally finished my work on the gearbox and differential and I am now in the process of putting the engine together again and have had good use of your blog even if my car is not an Excel. I have been reading the posts about the engine, but found myself going backwards and forwards looking at the different months to find (and find again) the items I was working on. I therefore decided to make my own index and have gone through all the months of your blog and written the Dates and the Topics in an Excel spread sheet. When I got to November 2017 I found your Blog Content summary which I have included at the end. I have printed it out as a (searchable) PDF file as well. If you think this might be of use to anybody else let me know and suggest a way I can send it to you.
ReplyDeleteThanks again for all the knowledge you have shared.
All the best from Ola Sorhagen.
Hi Ola thanks for your interest, I'm really pleased you like the blog and find it helpful. Your index sounds fascinating but to be frank I don't know how to include it. I have put a link to my valve setting spreadsheet as a Google document but it's not really convenient like that. I've always thought it odd that the blogger site doesn't add such a thing automatically. I just recommend everyone use the search box. If you want to mail me the files I will see if I can link it in somehow.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes
Mike
You can get the decals from a company called "i say ding dong" Dont know what the quality is like but will be getting some very soon so can let you know what they are like. John.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I have used them for bike logos previously and they also made my do not jack stickers. Quality is fine and they can make logos to a design... Hence the pics posted here.
